Original Danziger Goldwasser has been creating unforgettable pleasure
experiences for people all over the world for more than 400 years.
To this day, Original Danziger Goldwasser is produced on the basis of
consummate distilling expertise using the original recipe which
has been handed down from generation to generation and remains
a closely guarded secret, just as it was at the Der Lachs distillery in
Gdańsk back in the 16th century. The unique composition consisting
of the flavors of the finest herbs, choice spices, the greatest
craftsmanship, and a great deal of passion makes Original Danziger
Goldwasser the most extraordinary of all herbal liqueurs.
Gilded with the finest 22-karat gold leaf. Feel the passion
resulting from 400 years of consummate distilling expertise.
In 1598, Ambrosien Vermöllen founded what is now Germany’s oldest liqueur factory,
which went on to become well known under the name Der Lachs. Its best-known invention,
Original Danziger Goldwasser, then followed in 1606. This “golden water” containing
real 22-karat gold leaf soon established itself as a noble social drink.
And so it happened that Original Danziger Goldwasser was also the preferred liqueur
of the legendary czars Peter and Catharine the Great.
But how did the distillery come to be named Der Lachs?
The answer can be found by going back in time to 1704, the year in which the Vermöllen family
took up residence in a new town house in the respectable street Breitengasse in Gdansk.
House numbers were not yet commonplace and instead symbols were carved above the front doors.
And in the case of the Vermöllen’s home, the symbol was a salmon, in German “Lachs.”
To this day, Original Danziger Goldwasser is distilled using the same recipe which has been
passed down unchanged as well as centuries of tradition, and is one of the
longest-standing brands in the world.
